The Vietnamese football community is mourning a significant loss following the death of the celebrated expert Nguyễn Văn Vinh at 3:30 in the morning on February 25, 2026.

Mr. Nguyễn Văn Vinh laid the foundational stones for the golden era of Hoàng Anh Gia Lai and played a key role in shaping the establishment of the HAGL Arsenal JMG Academy.

His passing concludes a journey of over half a century dedicated to the sport, leaving a profound void in the hearts of football professionals and fans of the mountain city team.

Born in 1942, Nguyễn Văn Vinh developed within the military football environment, a cradle that produced many generations of talented players for the nation's football. During his peak playing career, he wore the jersey of Thể Công, one of Vietnam's most tradition-rich clubs. Within the military setting, he was not only honed in professional skills but also imbued with a spirit of discipline, resilience, and competitive will—qualities that stayed with him throughout his subsequent coaching career.

He was instrumental in setting the initial groundwork for Hoàng Anh Gia Lai's golden age and contributed significantly to the formation of the HAGL Arsenal JMG Academy.

After retiring as a player, Nguyễn Văn Vinh quickly transitioned into coaching. He soon built his reputation through his clear tactical thinking, sharp ability to read the game, and a meticulous working style.

From the manager's seat, he led numerous clubs across the country, both large and small, such as Thể Công, CLB Công an TP.HCM, Đà Nẵng, and notably, Hoàng Anh Gia Lai. At the national team level, he also participated in the coaching staff of the Vietnam national team as an assistant, contributing his expertise during crucial phases for the squad.

However, the most profound mark of his career is linked to the mountain city club. In the early 2000s, when Mr. Đoàn Nguyên Đức began nurturing the ambition to elevate Hoàng Anh Gia Lai to V-League prominence, Nguyễn Văn Vinh was invited to take on the role of Technical Director. In this position, while not frequently in the media spotlight, he was the strategic "brain" behind planning squad development and building a long-term professional foundation.

Under his guidance, Hoàng Anh Gia Lai gradually transformed from a newly promoted team into a genuine force within the league. He worked closely with Coach Kiatisak Senamuang and his staff to develop an organized playing style, effectively blending tactical discipline with the explosiveness of star players.
