AFC's assessment: Vietnam aims for an impressive campaign at the Asian Cup

In 2014, a sixth-place finish caused the Vietnamese team to miss the chance to secure a World Cup ticket. However, eight years later, the team ended the wait by topping the playoff round to earn a place in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

This historic qualification was achieved despite initial concerns that the Vietnam team might have to withdraw from the 2022 India tournament after a large part of the squad contracted COVID-19 during a training camp in Spain.

At the 2023 World Cup, the Vietnam national team concluded their journey with three defeats in the group stage against strong opponents like the USA, Portugal, and the Netherlands.

Nevertheless, the invaluable experience of facing the world's top teams will serve as a foundation for the Vietnamese team's development in the upcoming Asian Cup.

Head coach Mai Duc Chung, who continues to lead the team despite previously announcing his departure after the 2023 World Cup, stated that the primary goal for Australia 2026 is to secure a spot in the subsequent 2027 World Cup.

The silver medal at the 2025 SEA Games demonstrated the potential of the Vietnamese women's team. Coach Mai will focus on earning points against India and Chinese Taipei before facing Japan.

The 76-year-old coach expressed his admiration for the players' dedication, as they shortened their Lunar New Year holiday to prepare for the tournament.

"The Vietnam women's football team regrouped on the second day of the Lunar New Year, accepting the sacrifice of time for family and personal matters to train for the upcoming competition.

We had trained before the New Year, but a long break during this period would certainly affect our fitness. Therefore, I suggested the whole team assemble early, and everyone agreed.

That is proof of the highest spirit and determination of the Vietnam women's football team."
