Supporter Frank Ilett is gaining fame for his pledge not to cut his hair until MU wins five consecutive matches. According to calculations by ESPN, Frank Ilett might have to wait until the end of the season or... next year.

MU players, both current and former legends, have spoken about supporter Frank Ilett, known by the nickname "The United Strand," and his viral haircut challenge ahead of the recent Premier League match against West Ham two weeks ago.

"I don't care at all about his hair," MU midfielder Matheus Cunha said before the match, while legend Paul Scholes shared: "I just hope they win tomorrow night so that kid can go get a haircut."

Ilett's challenge continued to dominate discussions even after the match, as MU failed to secure a fifth consecutive victory, the condition for him to get his first haircut in over a year. Instead, they drew 1-1, and nearly lost if not for Benjamin Sesko scoring with a clever touch in stoppage time. Now, a glimmer of hope has been reignited after Sesko scored the only goal for MU's 1-0 win at Everton on Monday night.

This result keeps MU in 4th place, maintaining their chance for a Champions League spot next season and preserving Carrick's unbeaten record. But it also means Ilett's challenge, which started in October 2024, will continue, because to get his... haircut, Ilett must now wait for MU to win four more consecutive matches, which is no simple task.

Last week, Ilett marked his 500th day, with his hair longer than ever. If MU cannot win five consecutive matches in the remaining 12 fixtures this season, the challenge will extend into the next season starting in August, adding another 6 months. In an interview with ESPN back in October 2025 on the one-year anniversary of the challenge, Ilett admitted things hadn't gone according to plan: "I thought it would only last a few months and be a bit of fun. It was a way to spread some humor to MU fans during a tough period. I didn't think it was too far-fetched then, because they had won five in a row the previous season."

Ilett began his challenge just 8 months after MU's most recent run of five consecutive wins, from January to February 2024. In the Premier League era (since 1992-93), there have been 333 instances of clubs winning five consecutive matches across all competitions. MU alone has achieved this 58 times, but notably, over the past two years, the "Red Devils'" inconsistent form has prevented any further five-match winning streaks.

It's not easy for MU to win five consecutive matches

Since MU last managed it, ten other teams have won five consecutive matches: Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Liverpool, Man City, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham. Most of these streaks occurred with little fanfare, for example, the most recent being Man City's 2-1 win over Newcastle last weekend, completing their fifth straight victory.

However, for a long period, MU hasn't even come close to that achievement. Under manager Ruben Amorim, they only managed three consecutive wins once, back in January of last year, defeating Rangers and Fenerbahce in the Europa League and beating Fulham in the Premier League. Although Ilett intended to bring "joy" to MU fans during a difficult time, not everyone is pleased.

"He drives me crazy," legend Wayne Rooney said on the No Tippy, No Tappy podcast for BBC before the West Ham draw. "We're talking about Carrick and MU trying to win a fifth consecutive match, but everything revolves around this guy getting a haircut. I bet if MU wins, he'll be sad because he'll no longer be the center of attention," the former MU striker asserted.

MU only has 11 matches left in their 40-game season, as they are not in European competition and were eliminated early from the Carabao Cup (lost to Grimsby Town) and the FA Cup (lost to Brighton). The chance of them winning five consecutive matches in the remainder of the season is low.

Only 5 of the remaining 11 matches are against teams in the bottom half of the table, but 3 of those are in the final three rounds. According to Opta's latest power rankings and factoring in home advantage, MU's most statistically favorable sequence for five consecutive wins is actually the final five matches of the season, against Brentford, Liverpool (playing at Old Trafford), Sunderland, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton.

The earliest MU could achieve a five-match winning streak is on March 20th, facing Crystal Palace, Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth in sequence. However, it must be said this is a difficult run of fixtures, with MU playing away at Newcastle and Bournemouth. Furthermore, Aston Villa is a formidable team currently above the "Red Devils," leading MU by 3 points and having won 2-1 in the reverse fixture. Aston Villa has now become a target for MU to chase, and the upcoming match against them in March will be crucial for MU's pursuit of 3rd place.
