Lamine Yamal missed a penalty, leading to a shocking defeat for Barca in La Liga

In the early minutes, aside from Fermín López’s lively play, the visiting players seemed unfocused, allowing Girona’s Vladyslav Vanat and Bryan Gil plenty of space and constant pressure.

Shortly after, Fermín assisted Raphinha, then Lamine had a large open chance to score, but both opportunities were regrettably wasted. Ferran Torres kept testing his luck in an exciting attacking duel.

Girona nearly opened the scoring when Vanat missed a great chance from Gil’s precise cross. On the opposite side, Barcelona fired multiple shots but only one of eight attempts was on target, notably Raphinha’s shot that hit the post.

The tension peaked just before halftime when Dani Olmo was fouled by Daley Blind inside the box. However, Lamine Yamal struck the post on the penalty kick, ending the first half with disappointment for the visitors.

In the second half, Barcelona continued to press, but Girona remained extremely dangerous on counterattacks.

As the pace slowed around the 60th minute, Thomas Lemar suddenly changed the game’s course. Yet just two minutes later, Pau Cubarsí scored his first La Liga goal with a powerful header from Jules Koundé’s cross, putting Barcelona ahead.

The visitors’ joy was short-lived. Minutes later, Lemar capitalized on a defensive error to level the score at 1-1 for Girona. Goalkeeper Joan García then made two excellent saves, preventing an earlier Girona lead.

However, at the 86th minute, Fran Beltrán unleashed a precise low shot to seal a 2-1 victory for Girona, sparking wild celebrations among the home fans.

A late red card for Joel Roca reduced Girona to ten men, but it did not affect the final result. Barcelona had won four of their last five away matches against Girona, scoring 12 goals in that span, making this defeat a disappointing slip for coach Hansi Flick’s side.

The La Liga title race remains extremely intense after this round, with Barca now two points behind Real Madrid in the standings.
