Malaysian naturalized player 'holds breath' awaiting CAS ruling

All attention will focus on Lausanne today (26/2) as Hector Hevel waits for a crucial ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This judgment could shape the upcoming phase of his career as well as his prospects with Malaysia’s national squad.

The midfielder from Johor Darul Ta'zim was among seven players sanctioned by FIFA on September 25 last year, receiving a 12-month ban from all football-related activities due to allegations of using forged documents.

However, in January, the players were temporarily "rescued" when CAS lifted the ban pending the final decision.

Today’s hearing in Switzerland will decide whether Hevel and his teammates will have their suspensions overturned and be allowed to continue representing Malaysia or face reinstatement of the ban.

Born in the Netherlands and naturalized as a Malaysian citizen in May, the player made an immediate impact internationally before being sanctioned.

He scored in his debut match during the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers against Nepal and participated in the 4-0 victory over Vietnam’s national team.

While his off-field future remains uncertain, Hevel continues to maintain impressive form on the pitch.

At 29, he has impressed playing as a left winger for Johor Darul Ta'zim, especially in the 1-0 AFC Champions League Elite win over Vissel Kobe, which secured qualification to the knockout stage.

He also featured in this position during the 5-0 first-leg quarterfinal victory against Melaka in the Malaysia Cup.
