ASEAN Cup 2026: Malaysia hopes for a 'miracle'

Currently, the Malaysian team is facing a huge challenge after losing 0-2 to Vietnam in the first leg at home. Their opponent is a very impressive Vietnam side on a 24-match unbeaten run under coach Kim Sang Sik.

Although they have to play away from home with a disadvantage on the scoreline, the 58-year-old strategist of Malaysia still hopes his young players can overcome adversity. Recalling the memory of the 2014 AFF Cup, when Malaysia under coach Dollah Salleh came from behind to beat Vietnam 4-2 at My Dinh after losing 1-2 in the first leg, Tan Cheng Hoe believes history has proven that no mountain is insurmountable in regional football. He emphasized that although the generations of players have changed, the spirit from that historic comeback will be a strong motivation for the team to believe in any possibility that can happen in the next 90 minutes.

According to Malaysian media on August 18, at the pre-match press conference in Hanoi, Coach Tan Cheng Hoe also gave a stern reminder, asking the players to maintain their composure and not be distracted by social media or negative public opinion. He hopes the young players will gain valuable experience when facing a top opponent like Vietnam, and must remain calm to avoid being intimidated by the pressure from the packed stands of opposing fans. According to him, football does not have a predetermined script for the stronger team, and if they seize their opportunities well, Malaysia can completely change the outcome of the match.

Sharing the same view as the head coach, midfielder Ahmad Aysar Hadi Shapri affirmed that the whole team will give their all on the pitch. While respecting Vietnam's impressive record, the Malaysian players remain optimistic and confident, ready for the decisive battle.

The second leg semifinal between Vietnam and Malaysia will officially take place at 8:00 PM on August 19 at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi. The result of this match will determine which team advances to the final of this year's Southeast Asian Championship.
