UEFA forces Man United to adjust one detail before their Champions League comeback

Man Utd recently introduced its third strip for the 2026/27 campaign, boasting a quite distinctive look. Nonetheless, the club cannot use the exact same version of this jersey when competing in the Champions League, as stipulated by a UEFA regulation.

Man Utd unveiled the third kit for the 2026/27 season last weekend, catching attention with the vertical arrangement of three logos in the center of the chest.

The Adidas logo, the famous Red Devil emblem of Man Utd, and the fireball icon of chipmaker Snapdragon are placed consecutively, creating a minimalist and distinctive look compared to the home and away kits.

This design was agreed upon by Man Utd, Adidas, and Snapdragon to establish a unique identity for the third kit. However, when the Red Devils wear this outfit in the Champions League, one element must be altered.

According to an explanation from Man Utd, UEFA requires that the version of the main sponsor's logo appear consistently across all kits a club uses in the same competition.

While Man Utd's home and away shirts feature the full logo including the Snapdragon wordmark, the domestic version of the third kit only retains the fireball icon without the text below.

This means that when the third kit is used in the Champions League, Man Utd is obliged to add the Snapdragon wordmark.

“UEFA stipulates that the same version of the logo must be used on all kits of a club in the competition. Therefore, the sponsor on the third kit must be identical to that on our new home and away shirts, which include the wordmark,”, Man Utd explained on the official website.

This seemingly minor adjustment means that the Red Devils' third kit version in the Champions League will differ from the one used in the Premier League or domestic competitions.

Snapdragon became the primary sponsor on Man Utd's chest starting from the 2024/25 season. Meanwhile, Adidas remains the kit manufacturer for the Old Trafford side after the two parties signed a 10-year extension in 2023, with a minimum announced value of £900 million.

The detail concerning the kit is even more noteworthy because the 2026/27 season marks the return of Man Utd to the Champions League after a three-year absence.

This will also be the first time the Red Devils take part in the Champions League since the tournament transitioned to a 36-team league phase format. According to UEFA's schedule, the draw for the league phase of the 2026/27 season is set for August 27, with the first matchday taking place from September 8 to 10.
