This summer, Manchester United hope to bring in a new left-back, but there has been no real breakthrough. Reports from UK media reveal that the club was offered the chance to sign Tottenham's England international Djed Spence, but chose not to follow up. The key factor is that Spurs demanded too much from Premier League rivals, and the player is now heading to Italy's Serie A for a significantly cheaper price.

Spence can play as a full-back on both sides. After the World Cup, Tottenham reportedly valued the English international at £45 million and offered him to clubs including Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Aston Villa, and Everton. However, none of them, including United, were willing to meet that price.

Sky Sports reports that Spence will now join Inter Milan in Serie A for a transfer fee of just £30 million, which is one-third cheaper than what Premier League clubs were asked to pay. British media reveal that Inter have agreed to give Tottenham 10% of any future sell-on fee for Spence.

As for Manchester United, they still have no clear target for a left-back. Newcastle have refused to sell 21-year-old Lewis Hall, and signing him would cost well over £60 million. According to the Manchester Evening News, United have admitted that their plan to bring in this primary target is now essentially hopeless.

Arsenal youngster Myles Lewis-Skelly is not interested in a transfer, and like Hall, his price is high, possibly exceeding what Sir Jim Ratcliffe is willing to pay. Fulham's Antonee Robinson is also unlikely to join, as Ratcliffe prefers younger players. United are still considering Santander's 19-year-old Spanish player Jorge Salinas, whose release clause is only £13 million, while Club Brugge's 21-year-old Belgian international Joaquin Seys would cost around £30 million in transfer fees.

This weekend, there are also rumors that Manchester United are negotiating personal terms with Paris Saint-Germain's Ibrahim Mbaye, who scored in a recent friendly against the Red Devils. The 18-year-old Senegalese winger is reportedly willing to move to the Premier League, and PSG are asking for £43 million for Mbaye. Liverpool are also interested, but the deal has stalled due to the high transfer fee.

British media believe that unless Rashford leaves Manchester United, the club is unlikely to sign a new winger. Transfer expert Alex Crook said: "On the possibility of Mbaye joining United, I think it's very slim. Rashford has returned to the team, and Carrick has praised his attitude in training. It seems that Rashford will return to the United first team after an 18-month loan spell."

The player Manchester United are currently closest to signing appears to be Leicester City's young midfielder Louis Page, who plays in League One. The 18-year-old Englishman was not included in the Foxes' squad for their match against Notts County, which is seen as a sign that he is about to leave.
