"I am not perfect": Tottenham captain writes emotional farewell letter on the day of his departure from the club

As he prepares to end his five-year stint with Tottenham and join Atletico Madrid, Cristian Romero has penned an emotional message to the club and its supporters

Cristian Romero is experiencing his final moments as a Tottenham player. Before the move to Atletico Madrid was officially announced, the Argentine defender took the initiative to say goodbye to the London club through a social media letter.

"Today, I say goodbye to a place that means so much more than just a club,"Romero began his message. The 28-year-old center-back described Tottenham as home, a challenge, and the place where he and his family built an important part of their lives over the years.

Romero joined Tottenham in 2021 and spent five seasons in North London. He said that from day one, he had a clear goal: to leave a mark on the club's history through sacrifice, effort, and especially to help Spurs end their long wait for a trophy.

That dream finally came true when Tottenham won the Europa League in the 2024/25 season, the club's first major trophy since 2008. Romero played a key role in that journey and was named UEFA Europa League Player of the Season.

However, the Argentine defender's time at Tottenham was not always smooth. In his farewell letter, Romero did not shy away from that fact.

"I know I am not perfect, but one thing gives me peace: I always gave my all. I leave with a heart full of memories and immense pride in everything we have experienced and achieved together,"

The 2022 World Cup champion also thanked his teammates, coaches, club staff, and fans who accompanied him throughout his years in North London.

The message was concluded with a short but emotional sentence: "I was one of you. Today I leave, but I will always be one of you."

After five years, one trophy, and many ups and downs, the Tottenham captain will officially leave the club. The journey may not have been perfect, as he himself admitted, but what remains in the end is perhaps not just about titles or on-field memories.

Because at least, Romero once wore that shirt, fought for it, and gave the full passion of a part of his youth to Tottenham.

Romero's farewell came as the deal to take him to Atletico Madrid was in its final stages. Tottenham and the Spanish club agreed on a total fee of around €40 million, including add-ons. Sky Sports confirmed the two clubs had finalized the transfer, while Spanish media reported that the Argentine defender had undergone medical tests and was expected to sign a contract until 2031.

Atletico Madrid will open a new chapter for the 2022 World Cup winner. There, Romero will have the opportunity to work under fellow countryman Diego Simeone, closing his five-year journey in North London to return to La Liga and take on a new challenge in his career.
