The Opta supercomputer considers Arsenal the most promising contender for the 2026/27 Premier League championship, whereas Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City are confronted with significant uncertainties after managerial shifts.

The 2026/27 Premier League season is drawing near, and the first predictions have emerged. According to Opta's model, based on 10,000 data-driven simulations, Arsenal is the highest-rated team for successfully defending the title.

Mikel Arteta's side has been given a 38% chance of lifting the trophy at the end of the season. If Arsenal indeed retain the crown, Arteta will join a very exclusive group in Premier League history. He could become the fourth manager to lead a team to consecutive English league titles, following Sir Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho, and Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal ended a 22-year wait to win the Premier League last season. The London club overcame Manchester City after finishing as runners-up in three consecutive previous seasons.

According to Opta, Arsenal remain the top contender for the new season with a 38% championship probability, significantly higher than the rest.

However, the data model also highlights a worrying point for the Emirates Stadium side: the injury situation of center-back William Saliba. When Saliba is unavailable, Arsenal's Premier League win rate is said to drop sharply from 68.7% to 47.6%, underscoring the French defender's importance in Arteta's system.

Manchester City rank second in the list of title contenders with a 20.5% chance, despite Pep Guardiola's departure as manager.

The Manchester club enters the new season under the guidance of Enzo Maresca and has experienced a turbulent summer. Their most notable signing is Elliot Anderson, who joined the club for a reported fee of £116 million.

Nevertheless, Man City may continue to lose key figures. Rodri is predicted to possibly leave the club, while Bernardo Silva has already bid farewell.

Liverpool drops sharply in title prediction

Liverpool is ranked third by Opta in the title race, but the gap with Arsenal and Man City is quite large.

"The Kop" is given only a 9.2% chance of winning the league. This is a notable shift compared to last season. Liverpool was previously assessed by Opta as having a 28.5% chance of defending the title under Arne Slot. However, the reality turned out differently, with Liverpool finishing in fifth place.

This season, Liverpool enters a new era under the leadership of Andoni Iraola. The Spanish manager himself admitted during preseason that his team is currently unable to maintain the desired intensity.

The coaching changes thus make Liverpool one of the most unpredictable teams of the season.

Man United, Aston Villa, and Chelsea in the competitive group

Manchester United ranks fourth in Opta's prediction with a 6.2% chance of winning the title.

Manager Michael Carrick will need to help the team regain their standing in the Premier League race, but the data model still rates the "Red Devils'" chances significantly lower than the top three contenders.

Unai Emery's side had a difficult summer, selling Morgan Rogers to Chelsea for a record British player fee of £117 million. Youri Tielemans also moved to Manchester United.

Nonetheless, Aston Villa is still rated higher than Chelsea by Opta.

Chelsea, under new manager Xabi Alonso, has a 4.1% chance of winning the title. One advantage for the West London club is their relatively favorable schedule, as they are not competing in European competitions this season after missing out on UEFA club tournaments last term.

Tottenham Hotspur follows next with a 2.9% chance of triumph under new manager Roberto De Zerbi. Spurs are among the biggest spenders in the summer transfer market. They are reported to have signed notable new recruits such as Sandro Tonali for £100 million and Mateus Fernandes for £85 million.

These substantial investments are expected to help Tottenham improve their disappointing performances over the past two seasons.

Spurs finished in 17th place in both of the last two consecutive seasons and only secured survival on the final day of the previous campaign. Therefore, despite being considered a title contender, Tottenham still has a lot of work to do to prove they can return to the top group of the Premier League.

The relegation battle

At the bottom of the table, the three newly promoted Premier League teams are predicted to be the highest-risk candidates for relegation.

Hull City is considered the most vulnerable, with a 38.7% chance of returning to the Championship after just one season. Ipswich Town ranks second with 31.2%, while Coventry City has a 27.9% risk of relegation.

However, the three newcomers can hope for a surprise similar to Sunderland last season. Sunderland was once rated as the team with the highest risk of finishing bottom, but ultimately had a memorable season and even qualified for European competition.

Nevertheless, Opta still believes Sunderland faces a relatively high relegation risk this season. The "Black Cats" have a 25.9% chance of going down, ranking fourth on the list of highest-risk teams.

Participation in the Europa League and relatively limited summer transfer activity could affect Sunderland's competitiveness.

Last season's statistics also worry fans of the club. Sunderland had the third-lowest expected goals (xG) from open play and faced the third-highest number of shots and the fourth-highest number of shots on target in the Premier League.

If they cannot improve these issues, their second season in the Premier League could be much more difficult.

One of the most notable predictions involves Fulham. The London club is assessed by Opta with a 23.4% relegation risk, ranking fifth on the list.

Fulham enters the new season after a major coaching change. Marco Silva has left and been replaced by Alvaro Arbeloa.

A managerial change always brings questions about adaptability, especially as Arbeloa must quickly build a new team and maintain Fulham's status in England's toughest league.

Behind them are Nottingham Forest with 18.1%, Brentford with 16.3%, Everton with 13.6%, and Bournemouth with 13.1%.

The new season promises to be full of upheaval

Opta's predictions suggest that the 2026/27 Premier League could be an exceptionally unpredictable season.

Arsenal holds the biggest advantage in the race to defend the title, but Man City remains a formidable opponent despite parting ways with Pep Guardiola. Liverpool must adapt to a new manager after a disappointing season, while Chelsea and Tottenham also enter the season with new bosses.

At the bottom, the three newcomers—Hull City, Ipswich Town, and Coventry City—are rated as the top candidates for relegation. However, Sunderland's story last season shows that prediction models only reflect probabilities, not what will actually happen on the pitch.

With 10,000 simulated scenarios, Opta leans toward the possibility of Arsenal continuing to dominate the Premier League. But when the ball starts rolling, injuries, form, fixtures, transfers, and the adaptability of new managers could completely overturn any predictions.

Arsenal is the number one contender. Man City is the biggest challenger. Liverpool, Man United, and Chelsea await opportunities to spring surprises. And at the bottom, Hull City, Ipswich, and Coventry will have to fight from the very first rounds if they want to avoid returning to the Championship.
