Thailand's national team receives a high-quality reinforcement.

Thailand heads into the ASEAN Cup 2026 semifinals with a strong momentum, yet Anthony Hudson's side has an additional source of confidence before facing Singapore.

Patrik Gustavsson has returned to the national team after missing the entire group stage due to club duties with BG Pathum United. The striker, who scored four goals in the 2024 ASEAN Cup, is now at 100% fitness and ready to play in the first leg of the semifinal at Jalan Besar.

Gustavsson is no stranger to the Thailand national team. He scored four goals when Thailand finished as runners-up in the 2024 ASEAN Cup. After about 17 months away from the national setup, the BG Pathum United striker returns at a time when Anthony Hudson needs additional options upfront.

Thailand won all four group-stage matches, scoring ten goals and conceding none. However, the semifinal presents a different challenge as Singapore tends to defend deep, maintain a compact shape, and wait for counter-attacking opportunities.

In this context, Gustavsson's presence gives Thailand an additional option inside the box. Teerasak Poeiphimai and Yotsakorn Burapha offer speed, movement, and pressing ability, while Gustavsson excels in physical duels, holding up the ball, and handling crosses into the 16.5-meter area.

This is a meaningful addition as Thailand faces a packed defense. If short combinations through the middle prove ineffective, crosses or second balls around the penalty area could become the away team's avenue to exploit.

Another advantage for Gustavsson is that he does not need much time to adapt to the current team's system. The striker previously worked with Anthony Hudson at BG Pathum United and is well acquainted with the English coach's tactics and working methods.

Thus, Gustavsson's return could help Anthony Hudson solve one of the toughest puzzles: breaking down Singapore's well-organized defensive system.

Thailand has demonstrated the ability to control matches and keep clean sheets, but they will need more against an opponent that does not intend to play open football. When Singapore drops deep, the space for forwards reduces significantly. A center-forward with the ability to contest duels and operate in tight spaces, like Gustavsson, could make the difference.

However, Gustavsson's return does not guarantee him a starting spot. Anthony Hudson still has Teerasak, Yotsakorn, and other options upfront. After a long absence from the national team, whether to start Gustavsson or bring him on in the second half will depend on how the Thai coach assesses his fitness and the flow of the match.

Nevertheless, the mere presence of Gustavsson forces the Singapore defense to prepare for an additional option. Thailand is no longer limited to forwards who rely on speed and movement. They now have a player who can play directly, contest aerial balls, and apply pressure inside the box.
