India's football governing body has informed FIFA that it will not take part in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, choosing to focus on a landmark friendly match with Brazil in October.

The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has officially communicated to FIFA that the national team will not compete in the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026. This decision was made because the tournament schedule clashes with a special friendly match between India and Brazil.

AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey explained: “We are unable to take part in the FIFA ASEAN Cup due to our prior commitment to the Brazilian Football Confederation.”

India will host Brazil in a friendly on October 3 in Kolkata. This is considered a rare opportunity for the players to face a team that has been five-time champion of the World Cup. Therefore, the AIFF has decided to give priority to this special showdown.

The Indian team has pulled out of the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026.

Earlier, the AIFF had planned to field two separate squads. One team would compete in the FIFA ASEAN Cup, while the remaining players would prepare for the match against Brazil. In a statement released after the Executive Committee meeting on August 6, the AIFF affirmed its intention to participate in both events and informed FIFA of this plan.

However, the plan could not be implemented. According to the Times of India, the AIFF has confirmed its withdrawal from the FIFA ASEAN Cup to focus entirely on the encounter with Brazil. Restrictions related to the schedule and regulations during the FIFA Days period are believed to be the reasons why India changed its initial approach.

In the FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026, India was placed in a group with Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The withdrawal of the South Asian team will certainly force the organizers to adjust the match schedule or the group allocation.

The AIFF believes that opportunities to face Southeast Asian teams may still arise in the future, while hosting Brazil is a milestone that might come only once for Indian football.

This decision has drawn mixed reactions. Former star player Bhaichung Bhutia argued that India should prioritize the FIFA ASEAN Cup because it is a suitable competitive environment that helps the team gain experience against opponents of similar level in Asia. The AIFF's initial plan to attend both events was previously reported by Business Standard.
